Should my child be given Flu vaccine?
Flu vaccine is an optional vaccine. Children with certain high risk conditions having recurrent wheezing / asthma, heart /kidney disease, diabetes etc should receive this vaccine or during outbreaks.
Which vaccines are compulsory & which are optional?
According to INDIAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS, these vaccines are for routine use: BCG, DPT, OPV, injectable polio, measles, MMR, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Chicken pox, H.influenza B, rotavirus, pneumococcal, typhoid and HPV. Some of these vaccines are given after discussion with parents due to their high cost.
Some vaccines are recommended for children having high risk conditions or under special circumstances. They are flu, meningococcal, cholera, rabies, yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis and pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccines.
Why is there so much variation in vaccination charts of different Clinics/ Hospitals?
Immunization science is continuously updating in relation with burden of diseases by virus / bacteria in society. Over a period of time, some diseases are better controlled, getting eradicated (for example, small pox, polio in near future and measles in US) and few more diseases are appearing. So there is constant research going on. Every year recommendations are changing to protect children with vaccine. Many times the timing of vaccine differs with brand of vaccine the parents are opting. These are the reasons for variation.
